Breed Focus: Silkies

Silkies, oh man, have you seen these birds? They're like nothing you've ever seen before! With their fluffy, silky plumage that comes in a variety of colors like white, black, blue and gray, and their black skin and five toes on each foot (most chickens only have four), they're definitely a head-turner. Not only are they great pets but also they are great show birds.

Silkies are a very popular breed to show, as they have a distinct look and are judged on their feather quality, color, and overall appearance. Silkies have a standard of perfection that they are judged against and being able to produce high-quality birds that meet that standard can be very rewarding.

But it's not just their looks that make them special, it's their personalities too. They're known for being super calm and docile, which makes them great pets. And because they're easy to handle and get along well with other birds and animals, they're perfect for backyard flocks. Plus, they're broody which means they love to hatch and care for eggs.

Now, they might not be the most efficient layers, only laying around 2-3 eggs a week, but who cares? They're just too darn cute. Plus, in some cultures, they're used for medicinal purposes. Their feathers and skin are believed to have healing properties and are used in traditional medicine. People even use their feathers in pillows and clothing to help with arthritis and joint problems.

Just a heads up though, they're not the toughest birds out there so they need to be protected from the cold and wet. And to keep their fluffy plumage looking its best, they'll need regular grooming.

All in all, Silkies are truly one-of-a-kind birds that are not only beautiful to look at but also great pets and show birds. They might not lay a ton of eggs, but their personalities and medicinal uses more than make up for it. Just make sure to give them some extra TLC in terms of protection from the elements, regular grooming, and preparing them for the show.
